We want to see more local children cycling, scootering and walking to school. Unfortunately the large number of parents choosing to drive their children to school and the resulting congestion has left some local parents wary of letting their children out to make their own way to school.
The School Streets programme looks to address this by putting restrictions on parking around schools at the start and finish of the school day, creating a safer and friendlier environment for children.
Among the benefits associated with school streets are the following
- Encourage more children to cycle, scooter, and walk to school with the associated physical and mental health benefits
- Improve air quality around schools and their students
- Reduce the risk of accidents among children travelling to schools.
- Encourage a greater sense of independence by enabling them to cycle, scooter or walk to school
